Introduction to Affiliate Marketing

So what is an Affiliate?

Affliate marketing is very simply a business relationship where an individual or business (the affiliate) markets other peoples products in return for commission. The market is huge and virtually anyone can do it with basic computer skills and an Internet connection.

Lets take a simple example - a company sells high end printers and photocopying machines - to promote more business they set up an affiliate scheme. In this scheme they offer to pay 10% commission on any sale that an affiliate brings in - so if you introduce a customer and they buy a £800 printer you make £80 commission.

Sounds Great - well yes it can be. Becoming and affiliate for a company is usually very straight forward - sign up with them and you'll get an ID which and a set of links which you can use to send people to the companys website - whatever they buy when using that link you get commission for!

What do I need ?

In theory you need very little - everything can be obtained online - in practice you are going to need a website or blog in order to drive traffic to your chosen business partners.

Your partner will track all visitors who arrive using your link and record via a cookie - some firms offer different expiries of cookies. Basically if a firm offered a 3 month cookie in their terms - that would mean that you would receive commission on anything that customer bought in the next three months from them - even if they bought nothing on their initial visit. This is one of the reasons that affiliate marketing can be such a powerful income generator - potentially income can be made from a single click many months after the event.

It is important to remember that you are just acting as an intermediary - your customer pays no more than if he went directly to the retailers site - the transaction is identical in all ways,.

Sounds Easy - tell me more

It is potentially a very simple concept - but as always in life it does take a surprising amount of work.

What products should I promote ?

I don't think there is any type of good or service which somewhere doesn't have an affiliate scheme. You can market just about anything you can think of but obviously you need to check the terms and conditions of each of scheme. Commission rates and cookie lengths can vary greatly from shceme to scheme however it is important to pick a product that you think you can market properly.

Don't select the product just with the highest commission rate - often these products are thenj most difficult to sell. A commission rate of 70% sounds great but 70% of nothing isn't going to buy you that Ferrari! Companies with great trade names and great products will generally offer much lower rates but will be much easier to promote - people like Amazon offer low commission rates but offer a brand that is trusted so people buy from them. -

Initially you'd be well advised to start with a product you have some knowlege about - you'll know what are good products, who is likely to buy them and have ideas on how to promote them.

You can find affiliate schemes to join either through companies like Commission Junction or Affiliates For You - who are basically affiliate superstores or soemtimes schemes are run directly through a chosen retailer.

Where Do I put the Links ?

Well obviously you need to put them where potential customers can see and click on them. In practice you have two options

  • Web Site or Blog
  • Pay per Click Advertising (PPC)

  • So you can put them on your own web site (or one you create specially) or you can use an advertising system such as Adwords to send customers directly to the merchants web site (via your link of course). PPC is the quickest method as it can potentially start bring you sales straight away - but you must check the terms of the affiliate contract (most will have some rules on using PPC) and also be careful as you can easily lose lots of money using PPC methods.

Incidentally a lot of the "Get Rich Schemes" you'll see advertised on the internet are based around using PPC to drive traffic directly to a specific site - I'll put up a page in more detail on how to do this.

How do I get People to see my Links ?

This is the tricky bit - using PPC you'll select keywords which people type into their search engine - when people search on those words your advert will be displayed. If the searcher clicks on your advert - they will go to the merchant via your link and you'll pay something for the costs of that click. Obviously the cost of your clicks has to be less than the commission you make :)

Using a web site or blog - you basically have to promote your web site and make it more visible to users - read the section on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) to learn more.
